About Hickstory

Hickstory is a non-profit organization undergoing the project at hand. Our rationale for this project is that young adults who have aged out of foster care, is of paramount importance. Therefore, they deserve just as more benefits that come with life, as other young adults. Leaving them with no place to call a home or life changing opportunities after foster care, could most likely make them seek for a comfort in things that could prompt vices as robbery to mention but a few or even make them end up victims of life threatening situations such as youth trafficking or even becoming parents at a younger age. For these and many more reasons, Hickstory wants to shift the paradigm on how these youth should be treated by serving as a transitional home that provides well meaning programs such as coaching on life skills, independence, financial stability and more for young adults who have aged out of foster care. Hickstory will ensure that the target population of young adults in Houston TX, who have aged out of foster care, has all it takes to be relevant individuals in the society. That way, we can ensure better lives for them.

Nyeshia Hicks is the founder and CEO of Hickstory Inc. Most people will describe Ms. Hicks as a strong, caring, outgoing woman. Ms. Hicks graduated with her Bachelor's degree in Human Services, with a minor in psychology. During that time she had the pleasure to study abroad in Ghana Accra. Ms. Hicks is the proud owner of La Bougie Wick, A Candle Making Experience. Most of all she is a successful professional in the Social Services field with over a decade of experience. Ms. Hicks career consists of working with a wide variety of populations such as, the homeless population, domestic violence survivors, individuals struggling with mental health, addiction, refugees/immigrants, aging individuals, and her passion, foster children. She has been nominated and has won awards for the work that she has done with the community. For instance, the Triumph Award, the Experience of the Year, and ESG I Housing Program Manager.

Ms. Hicks and her siblings grew up apart in different placements within the foster care system. They were exposed to neglect, abuse, homelessness, and much more during their journey. But at the end, none of them become a “statistic”. They are proud mothers, fathers, entrepreneurs, professionals, high school, and college graduates, and then some. When Ms. Hicks was 11 years old, she had a dream that one day she would open an organization to help other foster youth like her. With age the dream grew, and her hope was to one day touch the lives of children everywhere. As a child, she had no one to talk to about her concerns or what she was going through at the time behind closed doors. Ms. Hicks wants to make certain that no foster child deals with the trials and tribulations that she and her siblings had to survive. Most of all, Ms. Hicks and her siblings want to eliminate the negative stigma many foster children are subjected to. She knows that growing up in foster care stacks the odds against our foster youth. She understands that many never develop a strong support system or even graduate from high school, let alone college. The chances of becoming homeless are higher for foster youth. Statistically foster children become parents at a younger age and joblessness is higher for foster youth. Our mission, vision, target market, and staff information are available on this site. It provides insight into our organizational culture and strategies towards solving problems such as this.
